Located 35 kilometers off Kigali city in Bugesera District, Nyamata was a church before and during the war, a very big population of people approximately 2500 ran to it for refuge thinking they would be safe form their killers though unfortunately they were murdered mercilessly. The killers used guns, pangas to kill these innocent people that had hid in this church hence being called Nyamata memorial site after the church which is still in place since the genocide in 1994.
